Engineering consultant Patrick Parsons has been appointed to the creation of a new white-water facility in Dublin.
The €12million project, which is to be installed at George’s Dock under plans from Dublin City Council, will replace the current temporary platform in the centre of the dock.
The new designs will involve the construction of a white-water rafting course, including a swift water rescue training facility with an urban street scene. The rafting course will be located around the edge of the Dock with the swift water training facility located at the northern end of the dock. The central pool will be used for flat-water kayak training, canoe polo and water polo.
The white-water course will also host events that can be viewed by the public during competition time.
We will provide civil and structural engineering services on the dock, substation and control room. Our team will also be responsible for the design of the nearby Quayside building, which will be refurbished to become changing facilities, breakout areas and a café.
By turning George’s Dock into a high-profile sport and recreational facility, the council is transforming an area it has long tried to find a use for since inheriting it from Dublin Docklands Development Area (DDDA) in 2016.
The project is the latest addition to our rapidly expanding leisure portfolio, which includes the £270million North Star leisure complex facility in Swindon and the Lee Valley White Water Centre for the 2012 Olympic Games.
Peter Steinlet, CEO of Patrick Parsons, said: “Patrick Parsons has a wealth of experience engineering white-water facilities across the globe and we are delighted to add George’s Dock to that portfolio.
We are absolutely thrilled to be working on such an exciting project, one that will help the area realise its potential to become a thriving hub for elite and amateur water sport competition for the people of Dublin and its visitors.”
Derek Kelly, Project Manager for Dublin City Council, said: “Dublin City Council is delighted to be working with the Design Team of Urban Agency and Patrick Parsons on this very exciting scheme at George’s Dock. The vast experience the team at Patrick Parsons has on similar projects around the world will ensure a world class facility is delivered here in Dublin.”
The council intends to submit the Part 8 Planning application for the scheme next month.
