The Flood and Water Management Act is a piece of legislation that was introduced to address issues related to flood risk and water management. The Act, which came into force in 2010, aims to improve the country’s resilience against flooding, enhance water resource management, and promote sustainable drainage systems (SuDS).

One of the key focuses of the Act is flood risk management. It establishes a clear framework for identifying areas at risk of flooding, assessing the potential consequences, and developing strategies to mitigate and manage flood risks effectively.

The Act also recognizes the significance of sustainable water management. It aims to promote the sustainable use of water resources and ensure the availability of clean and safe water supplies. The Act encourages water companies, local authorities, and other relevant bodies to adopt integrated water management strategies, which consider both water quantity and quality, as well as the protection and enhancement of aquatic ecosystems.

At the beginning of July 2022 George Eustace, the current Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (at the time of writing) made a statement in Parliament detailing that Schedule 3 of The Flood and Water Management ACT (FWMA) would be enacted.
