Construction has just begun for phase two at Portland Green Student Village in Shieldfield, Newcastle City Centre. Patrick Parsons provided structural engineering design services for the project, which, when fully completed, will house 612 students in the city.
The project is about to undergo its second stage of works following the completion of phase one in August 2013. Providing en-suite bedrooms and with a Tesco and Subway store on the ground floor, the first phase of accommodation had been fully let to students attending Newcastle and Northumbria universities within days of completion.
The second phase will see 338 of the 612 bedrooms and an extra 4,500 square feet of retail space constructed, with a budget of £20million.
It is hoped that the development on the former brownfield site opposite Portland Road, will be open in time to accept students for the academic year 2015/16.
