Achieving Net Zero in Construction

Achieving net zero in the construction industry is a crucial step towards mitigating the environmental impact of buildings and addressing the challenges of climate change. Net zero refers to the concept of balancing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced with an equivalent amount of emissions removed or offset, resulting in a neutral carbon footprint. Construction plays a significant role in global emissions, accounting for a substantial portion of energy consumption, resource depletion, and waste generation. However, by adopting sustainable practices and innovative technologies, the industry can transition towards net zero and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Earlier this year we conducted research with one hundred senior executives of UK construction firms which have collectively been involved in over £26.6 billion worth of construction projects over the past year.

The survey revealed that 85% of respondents think enough is being done to reach net zero on time and a similar number believe COP26 Summit was instrumental in raising environmental, social and governance issues on the construction agenda.

Encouragingly, the survey also reveals that respondents see realistic commercial incentives for improving sustainability in future building projects. However for all the positivity, there are a number of barriers to achieving net zero targets.
