A soil slope failure occurred at the National Trust’s Cragside Estate on an over steepened section of slope supporting a key visitor’s access road leading to the Formal Gardens car park.

Patrick Parsons were responsible for providing geotechnical ground investigations and slope stability assessments to inform an engineering remedial options appraisal.

Investigation techniques included precusive  drilling, hand-held and machine-mounted window sampling, with in-situ SPTs and undisturbed soil sampling for effective stress and shearbox testing on remoulded soils.

The final engineering repair option comprised the use of rock fill core and rock-filled toe gabion baskets to provide required stability.
