The New Tyne Tunnel

Client: TT2

Status: Complete

Website: https://www.tt2.co.uk/

PPL were responsible for the construction specification and design of several buildings that formed part of the development of the new Tyne Tunnel crossing. These included new offices for the existing administration building and new Toll Plaza and new buildings to house services to both the north and south banks of the Tyne. All buildings were constructed using light weight cold rolled steel frames, as designed by PPL.

In addition to the superstructure design, PPL were responsible for the design and detailing of the foundations. These took the form of simple raft construction for the main admin building, strip foundations for the Toll Plaza Building and a complex raft foundation, with multiple trenches and levels to accommodate services, for the southern services building. The northern services building was required to sit directly on top of the new tunnel - PPL were responsible for the design and detailing of the system of large reinforced beams to span approximately 13m over the tunnel and support a very large imposed load requirement.

In addition, PPL were responsible for capacity checks on the existing structure and details to enable the refurbishment and re-cladding of the existing, multi-storey administration building adjacent to the north entrance of the original tunnel.
