Portland Green is the largest singly owned student village in the UK, providing circa 1870 beds. Patrick Parsons were appointed at post planning permission stage as part of the phased development.

Patrick Parsons were responsible for the full detailed structural and civil engineering design for Buildings 5 & 6, with the design including the piled foundations, substructure and superstructure steel frame. The external drainage design ensured full compliance with the overall drainage strategy, including SUDS requirements.

The main challenges associated with the proposed scheme were associated with contaminated land and ground improvement requirements needed for the former mine workings. Patrick Parsons’ extensive experience in contaminated land allowed us to develop a specific testing regime and we worked closely with the Remediation Contractor to agree a value engineering strategy for the removal of material offsite. Our experience of ground improvements, associated with former mine workings, allowed us to develop a detailed specification in which to agree the most effective, practical and cost-effective scheme with The Coal Authority.
